Philly Jewish Community

We are lucky to have such a warm, caring, and kind community that has grown in size over the years. Please see some of the amazing Jewish establishments and resources below.

Center City Eruv

The Center City Eruv includes most of Center City and South Philadelphia between the Schuylkill and Delaware Rivers.

This map shows the borders of the Center City Eruv. It is an interactive map powered by Google Maps; you can zoom in or out and move the map around by holding the left mouse botton and dragging the cursor. The map is not perfectly to scale, so please use the following guidelines:

  • Carrying is permitted north of I-76, which is generally the southern border of the Eruv.

  • From Passyunk Avenue and north, the Schuylkill River bank is the westernboundary of the Eruv.

  • Columbus Boulevard and the Delaware River waterfront area are outside of the Eruv's boundaries, as the Eruv on the east side of Center City primarily follows I-95.

  • Carrying is permitted on the south side of Poplar Street, as Poplar Street is the northern boundary of the Eruv.

  • Carrying IS PERMITTED over the South Street Bridge, thanks to an extension project which connects the Center City Eruv with the University City Eruv. Please note that if this extension is down, it does not affect the rest of the Center City Eruv. This extension was constructed under the strict guidance of Rabbi Brisman, the Rav HaMachshir.

Kosher Establishments

We are so lucky to have so many kosher options in and around Center City Philly with a special thank you to Rabbi Hirsch and his masgiach volunteers that have greatly expanded the kosher options.

Mikvaot

A Mikvah is a natural body of water or a gathering of water that has a designated connection to a pool designed specifically for immersion, according to the rules and customs of Jewish law. The above body of water consists of naturally collected water that was never stagnant or gathered by human means. It contains about 200 gallons of water.

The Mei Shalva Center City Community Mikvah at 509 Pine Street offers a fully operational women’s mikvah, men’s mikvah, and keilim mikvah. Volunteers are welcome to assist with staffing the keilim mikvah. For scheduling or appointments, please visit https://philamikvah.org or call/text 267-225-2651.
